Milestones


In 1913
, Harry Clemons, an American librarian while the first head librarian of Jinling University Library, set up courses on library science.

From 1923 to 1926, Hong Youfeng created Library Science Summer Lecturing Division.

In 1927, Library Science Department of Jinling University was established.

In 1940, Library Science Division was added.

In 1978, Library Science Division was resumed to recruit two-year undergraduate students.

In 1985, Library Science Department was resumed to recruit four-year undergraduate students.

In 1989, Department of Documentation & Information Science was renamed.

In 1992, Department of Information Management was renamed.

   Since its resumption in 1985, the Department has set up four academic specialties for bachelor’s-degree students: 1)Information Management & Information Systems, 2)Library Science, 3)Archives, 4)Editing & Publishing; three specialties for master’s-degree students: 1)Library Science, 2)Information Science, 3)Archives; still, two specialties for doctoral-degree students: 1)Information Science, 2)Library Science. A multi-disciplined, three-specialty-crossing structure has been formulated.

     There are three university-governed research institutes attached to the department: 1)Information Industry Institute, 2)Information Technology Developing Institute, 3) Publishing Research Institute. Besides, there are two university-governed centers: 1)Center for Chinese Social Sciences Research Assessment, 2)Information Retrieval Lab, and two state-governed research bases: 1)Chinese Assessment & Creation Center for Humanities & Social Sciences, 2)National Center for Information Resource Management, Nanjing Branch.  

     We have a faculty of 33, among whom 13 are professors (6 are doctoral advisors), 12 are associate professors, 4 lecturers and 4 lab researchers, while 90% have a doctoral or master’s degree.   

     In the past 20 years, we have more then 5000 students of all levels graduated who are now scattered all over the country and in all fields. Currently we have 560 undergraduates, 200 graduates, 900 adult-education students, and over 200 students for the graduate course program. Since 2000, we have 55 monographs and text books published, 580 research articles covered by CNKI database and 150 research projects in the charge of the department, giving us important influence and status in the field.


 

EDUCATION


Undergraduate Education

Information Management & Information System Specialty

    Founded in 1992 succeeding from its predecessor of Information Science, this specialty features its course structure concerning the whole procedure of information processing including information creation, production, dissemination, retrieval, organization, analysis, assessment, and service. New courses about information technology have been added, putting emphasis on the latest achievements such as Data Mining, Artificial Intelligence, Multi-media Information Retrieval, Citation Analysis, Internet Information Resource, Digital Libraries, E-Commerce, Image Retrieval, Metadata, Network Marketing, etc. Most of the courses are now web-based. This specialty has become one of the quality majors in Jiangsu Province. 

Library Science Specialty

    This specialty, founded early in 1927, was resumed in 1978, recruited four-year undergraduate students in 1985, recruited master’s-degree students in 1986, and recruited doctoral students in 2004. There are 8 faculty members: 5 professors (including 3 doctoral advisors, and 1 part-time professor), 3 associate professors. Up till now they have published 219 research articles, 21 monographs and 8 text books. 63 research projects have been assumed by this division, 10 of which are state-leveled. So far, this division has recruited 41 master’s-degree students, 27 of whom have graduated. The main courses are Brief Introduction of Documentation, Outline of Administration, Principle and Methodology of Systematic Management, Computer Programming, Principle of Databases, Information Dissemination Technologies, Information Storage & Organization, Information Retrieval, Document Protection, Document Resource Collection, Library Modernization & Management, etc.    

Archive Management Specialty

The Archives specialty was formally founded in 1986 when we began to recruit four-year undergraduate students and second bachelor’s-degree students. We recruited master’s-degree students in 1999. This specialty features scientific and technical archives management as well as multi-disciplined academic background. We have 3 professors and 2 associate professors, with over 200 research articles, 20 monographs and textbooks published.    

Publishing Management Specialty

Although Editing & Publishing has more than 10 years of history as a master’s-degree specialty, it is a brand new undergraduate specialty of e-publishing. We have an Electronic Editing & Publishing Engineering Lab and Publishing Science Institute. The two professors are state-famous scholars. Our main courses focus on: Background of Editing, Publishing Economy & Administration, Multi-media Technology Application, Publishing Law, Modern Publishing Technology, Circulation, etc. 

Graduate Education

Information Science Section

Master-degree Education

Main research fields include: Information Research, Information Industry Research, Marketing Information Management, Automated Information Retrieval, Information Management System, Information Development and Utilization, Economic Information Management, etc.  Current advisors are: Shen Guchao, Su Xinning, Sun Jianjun, Zhu Qinghua, Huang Qi, Hua Weina, Zhu Xuefang, Liu Youhua, Yuan Qinjian.

Doctor-degree Education

Doctor-degree Education in Information Science started in 1998. Main research fields include: The Theory & Methodology of Information Science, Competitive Intelligence Research, Informatic Economy Research, Information Sources Management, Internet Information Sources Management, Information Intelligence Retrieval, Knowledge Management and so on. The current doctoral advisors are Shen Guchao, Su Xinning, Sun Jianjun, Zhu Qinghua.

Library Science Section

Master-degree Education

Main research fields include: Editing & Publishing Research, Information Sources and Retrieval, Bibliographical Research, Information Consulting and Reference, Library Management, Library Automation, Electronic Publishing Research, Electronic Information and Network Research, Information Sources Sharing, etc. Current advisors are: Zhen Jianmin, Ye Jiyuan, Xu Yan, Zhang Zhiqiang, Liu Shumin, Shan Qicheng, Chen Ya.

Doctor-degree Education

Doctor-degree Education in Library Science started in 2002 corporating with the national library of China. The main research fields include: Documentation Research, Library Science Research, Information Consulting and Reference Research, Ancient Rare Edition Research, Chinese Classic Bibliography Research, Information Sources Collection Research, Decision Making & Consulting, Periodicals & Bibliometric Study, and so on. The current doctoral advisors are Zhen Jianmin, Ye Jiyuan, Li Zhizhong. 

Archive Management Section

Master-degree Education

Main research fields  include: Economic & Scientific Archives Management, Technologies & Methodologies of Archives Management, Archival Information Retrieval & Utilization, Basic Theories on Archives Management, etc. Current advisors are: Wu Jianhua, Yan Xianglin, Luo Hui.

Lab of Information Technology

Lab of Information Technology was established early in 1985, covering 220M2, equipped with 85 Internet –and –Intranet -based computers both in Gulou and Pukou campus. The lab offers computer practicing courses for both undergraduate students and adult-education students. The main courses provided by the lab include: Computer Programming, Computer Application, Computer Network Technologies, E-Commerce, Internet Information Resources Management, Office Automation, Principles of Databases, Application Technologies of the Internet, Information Retrieval in Chinese and Foreign Languages, etc. 

CONTINUING EDUCATION

Continuing education in the department has a long history. Through long years of hard work and development, we have achieved a lot in the Specialty Designing, Course Planning, Classroom-teaching and Lab-practicing, formulating our market-oriented teaching characteristics.

1 Information Management and Information System Specialty

We have set up about 33 courses: Introduction to Computer, Introduction to Information, Systematic Theories & Methodologies, Database Systems and Applications, Introduction to Computer Network, Information Analysis and Research, Computer Programming Language, Information Dissemination Technologies, Information Retrieval, Information Storage and Organization, Information Policy and Legislation, Information System Development Tools, Information Consulting and Reference, Internet Information Resources, Data Structure, Paperwork and Secretary Study, Computer System and Software, Applied Statistics, Professional English, Information Institute Management, Web-based Marketing, Enterprise and Marketing Information, Introduction to E-Commerce, etc.

2 Information Management and Information System Specialty (Business-Oriented)

Based on the two-year study in Information Management and Information System Specialty, this program aims at training information specialists especially for business information management. Those who have taken 13 courses (no less than 70 credits altogether), and with the qualified graduate thesis and personality, will be awarded the state-accredited bachelor’s-degree certificate authorized by the Provincial Self-Study Committee.

3 Secretary and Computer Application Specialty

Secretary and Computer Application Specialty started in 1992, in the form of Two-year On-campus Class, Night-teaching Class, Correspondent Class, etc. The courses feature concerning: Introduction to Information, Paperwork and Secretary Study, Archives Management, Management Information System, Method of Social Survey, Reading of Policy Files, Communication, Information Analysis and Decision Making, Information Resources and Utilization, Office Automation, Internet Application Technologies, etc. This specialty was evaluated as the Provincial Adult-education Characteristic Specialty in 1998.

4 Business Information & E-Commerce Specialty

Started in 1992, Business Information & E-Commerce Specialty aims to train students to become qualified business and commercial management specialists with competence for marketing information.

FACILITIES & SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH

“985 Project Chinese Assessment & Creation Center for Humanities & Social Sciences

“985 Project Chinese Assessment & Creation Center for Humanities & Social Sciences was established by the cooperation between The Center for Evaluation of Chinese Social Science Research and Department of Information Management. The main tasks of this center are: to enhance the Database of Chinese Social Science Citation Index (CSSCI), establish a full-text database of source periodicals, implement multi-search of the databases, collect and declare the statistics related to humanities and social sciences, set up rules of different standards for the assessment system, etc.

 

National Center for Information Resource Management, Nanjing Branch

National Center for Information Resource Management, Nanjing Branch, authorized by the Ministry of Information Industry, was started in 2000. The main research fields include: Guidelines and Policies of Information Resource Management, Service for Enterprise Products Development, Information Integration, System Development, Training and Education for high-level Information Resource Management Personnel for Government & Enterprise, etc. In 2005, this center began to recruit master’s and doctoral degree candidates majoring in information management engineering. The Center for Evaluation of Chinese Social Science Research, Nanjing University

The Center for Evaluation of Chinese Social Science Research at Nanjing University was planned in 1999, when the Database of CSSCI began to be developed with cooperation of The Hong Kong University of Science & Technology. In the same year, the Ministry of Education ranked CSSCI to the most important research list. The center was formally established in 2000, currently having 11 experts and 15 database designers and administrators. The main research fields include: Assessment of Social Sciences Research, Social Sciences Database Development, Web-based Information sources in Social Sciences.

 

Lab of Digital Information Integration

This is a research-oriented lab, especially for the research and development of information collection, processing, storage, and service through digital methods. The research fields include: Networked Information Management, Internet /Intranet Application, Electronic Archives Management, Electronic Publishing Research, Applied Database Development, Social Informatics.

 

Multi-Information Processing Institute

Multi-Information Processing Institute was established in 2002. The research fields include: Mode Recognizing, Image Processing, Multimedia Information Retrieval, recognition of video, image, speech, and literal characters, content-based image retrieval, applied software of image and graph, theory and methodology on the development of image information retrieval. The executive director is Professor Zhu Xuefang.

 

Competitive Intelligence Studio

Competitive Intelligence Studio was started in 2000. Up till now we have finished over 40 working reports, participated over 20 national training projects, had master’s-degree students graduated in 5 years, established doctoral-degree education system with 7 doctoral candidates working at the present. The research fields include: Information Analysis Methodology, Information Service & Consulting Research, Competitive Information Data Mining, Information Legislation, Counter-Competitive Intelligence. The executive director is Professor Shen Guchao. 

 

Publishing Management Institute, Nanjing University

Founded in 1998, this institute has engaged its editing & publishing related research under the rules of combining theory with practice and comparing present with history, on the basis of research cases both at home and abroad. Up till now, we have published 6 monographs and assumed 3 social sciences research projectsone of which is supported by Ministry of Education, while the other two are provincial supported projects. The executive director is Professor Zhang Zhiqiang.

 

    Information Technology Institute

This institute was founded in 1994. The research fields include: Knowledge Management, E-Government, Data Mining, Information Retrieval, etc. In the past few years, this institute has assumed over 30 projects of state and province level or from enterprises. We have published over 10 articles in the first-rank journals and over 40 articles in core journals in China, as well as 10 monographs. The executive director is Professor Su Xinning.

 

Information Industry Institute

The research fields in this institute include: The Theory & Application of Information Sources Development & Utilization, The Theory & Practice of E-Government, Popularization & Research of E-Commerce, Information Strategy & Planning Research, etc. Four monographs have been published since 2000. The executive director is Professor Sun Jianjun.
